Listed, the top 20 sports in America! What is in your opinion?
Without much doubt, the 5 at the top should definitely be here, but what about the others?
- American Football - Americas true past time (other than Baseball) is the most viewed sport in America.
- Baseball - Let's put it this way, the only competition to have a world series where only America takes part.
- Basketball - Taken very seriously by the Americans and the Russians, but bigger in America.
- Hockey - Originally this isn't an American sport, it is however a massive sport in America.
- Golf - Always considered a posh mans sport, and it is, except Tiger Woods really set it off for everyone.
- Wrestling - On the TV every weekend and the occasional big fight, this is watched all over America.
- Tennis - Well, Venus and Serena kind of say it all really, plus the likes of Roddick.
- Skateboarding - Definitely one of the fastest growing sports in the world, with the help of America.
- Surfing - Enjoyed by all around the world, but made great by America.
- Ice Skating - This has been a major sport in America, although it is often overlooked.
- Boxing - Is starting to catch up with Wrestling, but needs more time and more frequent fights.
- Soccer - The Americans have only just started to accept this as a big sport, but it is growing.
- Archery - you may not have thought of this one, but Americans do perform very well.
- Volleyball – This was definitely going to be in here somewhere, what a great event, to take part in and watch.
- Cycling - A very tough sport, especially in competition with nations, but America sticks to its usual greatness.
- Track and Field - This is the Americans passion at the Olympics, they are by far the best at the Track and Field.
- Horse Racing - Will be a great sport for all, and could actually come higher in this list.
- Rock Climbing - A sport for all to enjoy, indoors or outdoors, much fun to be had, and in great American scenery.
- Extreme Sports – Anything that is considered by normal people to be very dangerous.
- Auto Racing - This covers all regions, the reason it doesn't come that high is because many think it is not a sport.
In your opinion, do these seem right? Can you do better? What a great way to find out – try Las Vegas holidays or New York holidays to really find out
What have our schools become?
Does anyone else agree with me, in that our schools have become so sports centered, that we have almost undermined the value of the actual purpose of school: to get an education! I can't even remember the number of sport rallies i had to attend, mandatory sport rallies. Of course the announcer calls out the names of everyone on sports teams, as if we have to worship them.
Why is it uncool to be smart? Do you remember if you ever went to a rally honoring those with good grades, good GPA? Probably not. Our smart students are not being recognized in todays school systems, and in turn, they might come to the conclusion that all their hard work is effort wasted. And it should not be like that.
In today's schools, priorities are given to the athletic departments mainly. Our schools are supposed to be about education, and we should let nothing get in the way of that.
Our schools are working the way the "change agents" want them to work (those in charge of school are now called change agents, you can look this up on line), which means the schools have been steadily dumbed down. Part of this dumbing down is glorifying sports.
I highly recommend you read any book by John Taylor Gatto (or look him up on line and read some of his essays) as he was a public school teacher for 30 years, besides being "Teacher of the Year" for NY and "Teacher of the Year" for NYC (early 90's).
Schools dumb people down. Even those who take their classes seriously do not get the education they deserve.
Schools today are all about the money and meeting state "standards", whether kids learn or not.
