WALK TALL, DON’T FALL
When it comes to health and longevity, the old saying that ‘the higher you are, the harder you fall’ could be changed to be ‘the older you are, the harder you fall’.
In the elderly, falls and fall-related injuries are extremely common and are in fact one of the leading causes of death among older adults. .When it comes to people over the age of 65, 30% fall every year and half of them fall repeatedly. Of course, not all falls lead to injury, but the experts tell us, many falls could be prevented.
Preventative action could take the form of practical improvements such as lighting, railings, supports, removal of debris and other hazards – as well as maintaining levels of personal strength and fitness.
A survey done by a hospital authority in Hong Kong showed that elderly people were able to reduce their chances of falling and injuring themselves if they practiced a type of martial arts called tai chi on a regular basis. Tai chi is a slow motion, soothing and therapeutic martial art which emphasizes balance. And in another study by a London hospital, older adults who completed a 12-week exercise programme were able to increase their strength by 30%. For every decade of their lives, adults are said to lose 10% of muscle strength, so those survey participants had effectively regained three decades of lost strength. How is that for turning back time!
Exercise programmes for seniors can clearly make a real difference, including improved balance and flexibility, increased bone density, muscle tone and physical strength. All of these improve quality of life, and all of these factors have an impact on decreasing the risk and probability of a fall.
But why wait? Martial arts is an activity that can be enjoyed by young and old, and plus it ticks all the right boxes when it comes to physical fitness and strength and emotional and spiritual wellbeing too.
Experienced Perth-based martial arts exponent and 4th Dan, Grant Rollinson, says karate is recognised worldwide as a fantastic sport to develop great physical skills as well as improve concentration and focus, confidence and assertiveness, discipline and motivation as well as reduce impulsive and anti-social behaviour. While senior citizens may not need help reducing antisocial behaviour, it’s a vital skill for vital for children, which is why so many parents send their kids to karate lessons.
Increasing numbers of parents are getting involved too, with young and old learning and training together in a fun, safe activity.
There are benefits from martial arts for people of any age. Young children in their primary school years benefit from enhanced organizational skills, improved concentration and discipline and skills in co-operative learning, while older children, teenagers and young adults benefit from enhanced self-esteem, physical strength and conditioning. For adults, karate is a good way of reducing stress, excellent for developing physical as well as mental and emotional strength and for directing a lifestyle that is healthy and holistic. Of course, issues such as weight-loss and personal achievement are goals that are appropriate at any age – and that can be fulfilled through martial arts.
Everyone benefits from exercise. Martial arts classes range from the soothing tai chi to the more vigorous pursuits of judo, taekwondo, kata karate, aikido and jujitsu, and the internet is a good place to start gathering information. They’re all different, but they have the same benefits – improved fitness, balance and strength – and that could end up being a life-saver. To parody another old saying – don’t let pride come before a fall, let martial arts prevent a fall!
