Facts About Babies That Will Surprise You
Most people know at least the basic baby things. You’ve been told that babies take time to recognize people. Most babies are able to recognize their mothers immediately after being born, but you already knew that. Most people understand that each baby will develop at his or her own pace. Baby’s do not follow a pre-set schedule for milestones. You might be surprised to learn that there are plenty of other things to learn about child development and babies. Nothing is more interesting than watching a baby grow up. So many things happen between conception and even early childhood. Even though it doesn’t look that complicated the truth is that growing up is fraught with challenges and changes!baby facts
When a baby is born his or her skull plates are not fused. The non-fused skull is one of the reasons that so many adults are afraid to hold newborn children. Your baby’s “soft spot” is nothing to play around with—if you are not careful you could cause your baby serious harm. About three months after your baby is born its skull plates will have started to fuse together and you won’t have to be quite so careful with the soft spot at the back of his or her head. It can take as long as a year and a half for the frontal plates of your baby’s skull to harden, so don’t assume that the worst is over when the soft spot calcifies together. You probably already knew that fetuses are able to hear sounds while they are still in the womb. There are studies upon studies proving that babies will react strongly to the sounds that have reached them through their mothers’ bodies. Did you know, though, that decibel levels are just as important while the baby is in the womb as it is once the baby is born? Those are impressionable ears even before the birthing process! The loudest sound your infant should be subjected to (inside the womb or outside of it) is the household vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners usually push the limit of the baby’s comfort level with noise, so it is a good idea to keep the music down and to avoid things like heavy construction and loud traffic.babies
Common knowledge states that babies don’t smile until long after they are born. Gas is usually given credit for the first signs of smiling in a baby’s life. Even experts thought that it was the parents that taught a baby to smile when it was happy, that the baby did not know how to express happiness right away. It was common knowledge that babies had an easier time expressing their unhappiness over something than feeling and expressing happiness. Now we know better. Advances have been made in ultrasound technology and more parents are seeing images of their children smiling while they are still in utero. Many doctors are now able to print out pictures for families that show the new baby smiling before he or she is born. Doctors now think that babies seem to “learn” how to smile because it takes them a few weeks to get over the trauma of having been birthed.
The amount of untapped baby knowledge out there will astound you. This is ironic since having extra information usually helps an adult with his or her patience levels.
The more you know about babies, the better prepared you will be as a parent. Go to it!
